Voting against yourself

Why do so many people vote for republicans when most of them will be worse off economically? Are guns and abortion restrictions more important than good education, healthcare and a good salary? And what if democrats promoted those economic programs nationally while allowing states to decide on guns and abortion? Or maybe let's just make all of these laws at the state level.
